Moss Agate is a colorless, translucent Chalcedony that has the appearance of containing green moss inside. The mossy patterns are not actual plant moss, but inclusions of the minerals chlorite or hornblende. It is found as filler in fissures or in pebble form and its chemical composition is silicon dioxide. While not precisely an “agate” (not having the requisite banding present), Moss Agate stone is included in the species due to having more than one color. It is usually formed during volcanic activity. Ancient cultures believed Moss Agate had healing powers and was a bringer of good luck. 18th century farmers and gardeners in Europe used the gemstone to encourage bountiful crops.
